SaWan’s Journey: Rediscovering Life With Expert Hearing Care

In your late 20s, life is often about new adventures and opportunities. For SaWan, a flight to Italy for work turned into an unexpected journey into hearing loss. Upon her arrival, she experienced ruptured eardrums.

“I got treated overseas, but there wasn’t much they could do for me,” she recalls. Unfortunately, her return flight worsened her condition, marking the beginning of a challenging experience with hearing loss.

The Battle Against Stigma

Soon after, SaWan noticed more symptoms of hearing loss and discovered she needed hearing aids permanently. The societal perception of hearing aids was burdensome.

“To lose your hearing at my age has a stigma attached to it,” she admits.

This stigma is something you might fear, too; it’s normal to be concerned that people might treat you differently or make fun of you. But take SaWan’s word for it: You’re not alone.

Finding the Right Care With Jacobs Audiology

In search of better hearing, SaWan invested in hearing aids from well-known brands such as Miracle Ear and Costco. Unfortunately, they didn’t meet her needs.

Her experience echoes a common issue where hearing aids fail to sufficiently improve one’s hearing. Sometimes, as SaWan experienced, they offer no hearing improvement at all.

Feeling the frustration, she pursued a professional evaluation to ensure her aids were fitted correctly, which led her to our team of experts.

Unlike SaWan’s previous experiences, she found that her time with our team focused on creating a personalized approach.

“[My audiologist] didn’t steer me to the most expensive products. She just said, ‘This pair isn’t going to break your budget, but it’s going to give you the very best in terms of bringing your hearing up to where you need it to be,’” notes SaWan.

SaWan and fellow patients like you are treated with the same care and empathy we would offer family. You deserve audiological care that respects your unique situation and doesn’t just fit you into a corporate model.

Regaining Life’s Beautiful Sounds

SaWan quickly demystified and normalized the use of her hearing aids with help from professional care.

“[Marcie] was the first to help me see that having hearing aids is the same as wearing glasses,” SaWan reflects.

With her new, better-suited hearing aids, SaWan’s life transformed. “You don’t really hear music and voices or follow conversations well—really, some of the most beautiful things that make life worth living,” SaWan shares about life without hearing aids.

Her journey illustrates the profound impact that appropriate hearing technology and patient-centered care can have on your quality of life.

Thinking back, SaWan often wonders how her untreated hearing loss impacted her academic pursuits. “To anyone my age, younger or older, just forget the stigma. Go get it taken care of, recapture your life so you can do everything you would as if you had great hearing,” she advises.

If you’re experiencing similar challenges, SaWan’s story is a gentle reminder to seek help sooner rather than later.

A Lifelong Commitment to Care

Despite living in a different state now, SaWan’s loyalty remains unwavering; “I will always go back to Maryland just to interface with Marcie!”
