How ReSound Smart 3D Hearing Aids Helped Joe Rediscover Music and Conversation

Joe’s world has always been filled with sound.

“I play guitar, and I’ve played for years, mostly too loud when I was younger,” he admits with a grin. From early band days to loud practice sessions, music shaped his life.

But a routine hearing test during military enlistment revealed something he hadn’t noticed: high-frequency hearing loss from years of playing in bands. “They give you a hearing test when you enlist,” Joe explains. “I found out then I had a high-frequency loss from playing in bands.”

For Joe, this was a wake-up call. Like many musicians, he hadn’t realized just how much sound he was missing, a lesson that would follow him through his career.

Rediscovering music, once familiar, would later feel like hearing a whole new world. He recalls moments when he had thought certain harmonies or subtle guitar notes simply weren’t there – when in reality, he just couldn’t hear them.

Military Headsets, Headphone Damage, and Hearing Loss That Only Got Worse

After high school, Joe joined the military as a linguist. His days were spent listening through headphones, often at high volumes.

“Sometimes lightning would hit the antenna, and it would just blow up in your ears,” he recalls.

Over time, Joe noticed he struggled to hear conversations, especially women’s voices, a classic sign of high-frequency hearing loss.

“It got to the point where I couldn’t really hear people talking,” he says.

Noise exposure from music and certain careers can gradually worsen hearing loss. Joe’s story demonstrates how easy it is to underestimate the cumulative effect – until daily life becomes a struggle.

Even small details in conversations or favorite songs can be lost, creating a subtle but meaningful disconnect from the world around him. He began noticing these challenges not just at work but also during social gatherings, movie nights, and while trying to enjoy quiet moments at home.

Why Joe Chose Marcie at Jacobs Audiology

Transitioning to an IT career, Joe sought professional help and found me at Jacobs Audiology. “She was really technologically savvy,” he shares. “She explained the nature of my hearing loss and gave me options tailored to what I really needed.”

Joe appreciated my focused, attentive approach: “She completely focuses on you when you’re talking to her. She had answers to all my questions.”

My combination of expertise and personalized care was exactly what Joe needed: someone who could match cutting-edge hearing technology with his specific lifestyle and hearing challenges.

My guidance gave him confidence that he could not only hear again but also reconnect with the sounds that mattered most. Joe also valued how I took time to explain hearing loss prevention and proper care for his devices, helping him maintain his hearing health for years to come.

Hearing the World Again

Joe’s first experience with his ReSound Smart 3D hearing aids was transformative. “Everything sounded really vibrant – it was like my mind wasn’t wired for that anymore,” he says.

The real breakthrough came when he revisited his old record collection. “I’d put on something I’d heard when I was much younger and suddenly realize what I had been missing!” he exclaims. “When you hear The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and can hear all the parts, it’s like, 'I didn’t know that was there! Wow, Lennon can play!’”

I also tailored programs specifically for Joe’s daily life: music listening, noisy restaurants, and driving environments. Using the ReSound Smart 3D app, Joe could fine-tune his settings in real time. “I can say, ‘I’m not hearing bass enough or treble enough,’ and he can adjust it. I need a setting for my music so I can hear it like everybody else does.”

With this personalized approach, Joe could finally hear music, conversations, and everyday life clearly. Even experiences he thought he remembered perfectly, like old records or casual chats, were revealed in vibrant detail. He shares that rediscovering the layers in his favorite music gave him a renewed appreciation for the songs and artists that had shaped his youth, bringing both nostalgia and joy.

Joe’s Advice: Don’t Wait, The Right Audiologist Will Change Everything

Joe’s advice to anyone facing hearing challenges is simple: “Just go see Marcie. Whatever your budget, she’ll find the right hearing aid for you.”

He emphasizes the importance of acting sooner rather than later: “Don’t wait as long as I did. You’ll be surprised at the difference it makes going to a professional who knows how to analyze exactly what your hearing loss needs.”

At Jacobs Audiology, we didn’t just help Joe hear again, we helped him rediscover the world he thought he knew, from music to conversation and everyday life.

The right audiologist can turn years of missed sounds into a fully vibrant, connected life. Joe now enjoys family gatherings, work meetings, and live music concerts in ways he hadn’t imagined possible.
