"It’s Like Hearing Life Again”: Mary’s Story at Jacobs Audiology

The Challenge
For Mary, a friendly professional who’s spent her career surrounded by people, missing pieces of conversation didn’t just make things harder. It made life feel quieter.
It started on the phone at her office. She’d hang up from a call at work and realize she hadn’t caught everything. “Patients would come in and say, ‘I said that on the phone,’ and I’d think, ‘Okay, if I’m missing [sound] from the phone and it’s right by my ear, what am I missing otherwise?’”
Then came the crowded rooms, weddings, dinners, and restaurants full of voices that seemed to meld together. “Everyone would tell me I was shouting, but I was hearing so many different things, I couldn’t focus on one conversation,” she said. “I found myself reading lips more than anything.”
That’s when Mary decided it was time to get help.
Finding the Right Fit
When her longtime audiologist retired, Mary began searching for someone new. She looked at reviews, checked recommendations, and came across Jacobs Audiology.
“From the moment I walked in, it felt comfortable,” she said. “The office was warm, the team was kind, and Marcie Jacobs took her time with me. Even though I’d been through the process before, she explained everything so clearly.”
A full hearing evaluation confirmed what Mary suspected: Her hearing loss was making it hard to stay connected in group settings. She felt confident she was in the right hands.
“Marcie didn’t just give me hearing aids. She gave me the chance to be part of every conversation again.”
The Plan and the Progress
Together, Marcie and Mary built a plan that fit Mary’s life. Instead of starting with Mary’s full prescription, she was gradually eased into it so her brain could readjust naturally.
After two weeks, they fine-tuned the settings, and the difference was incredible.
Mary was fitted with rechargeable, AI-powered hearing aids that adjust automatically to the sounds around her. Now, she can stream calls straight from her phone, change settings discreetly through an app, and enjoy crystal-clear sound wherever she goes.
“The first thing I noticed was the sound quality,” Mary said. “I could hear birds again. I could sit anywhere in a restaurant and still follow every conversation. I don’t have to touch my ears or worry about batteries anymore.”
Life Now
Today, Mary enjoys the simple things again, like dinner with friends, book club meetings, and chatting on the phone, without the stress of having to guess what’s being said.

“I tell people all the time, just get your hearing checked,” she said. “It’s no different from getting your eyes tested. Once you can hear clearly again, you realize how much you were missing.”
At Jacobs Audiology, stories like Mary’s show what happens when expert care meets genuine compassion, and how hearing better can truly change how you live every day.
From the Audiologist’s Chair
Mary’s story is a reminder that good hearing care is about more than just technology. It’s about trust, time, and teamwork.
“People often wait until they’re really struggling before they reach out,” says Marcie. “But modern hearing aids can do so much to keep you connected. With features like automatic scene adjustment and AI noise control, our goal is always to help patients hear comfortably and naturally.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, well-fitted hearing aids can significantly improve quality of life, communication, and even long-term cognitive health.
