One of the most common concerns I get from clients is whether they should wear hearing aids while working out.
Moisture can quickly compromise an aid’s functionality by hindering good sound output, among other mechanical issues.
So the clients are always wary that using the devices during exercise could damage them.
Modern hearing aids have superior capabilities that support active lifestyles. If you often hit the gym, go for a walk or run, or even play sports, you don’t have to worry about the impact your hearing aids will have during the activities.
You should ensure you always have them on as they help enhance your performance.
Why Is Wearing Hearing Aids While Exercising Important?
#1 They Keep You Safe Outdoors
You may have realized with hearing loss that keeping balance is a bit of a challenge, as the sound of your movement is usually distorted. This can be an even bigger problem when you are playing out in the field or even running, and you may find yourself falling quite often.
Likewise, wearing the aids while working outdoors is safe as they keep you aware of your surroundings. You may not pick important sounds like approaching vehicles or bikes without them, which can be risky.
#2 They Enhance Your Communication And Hearing Capabilities
Working out or playing without hearing aids can make you less effective. For instance, you may struggle to pick the coach/gym instructor/personal trainer’s instructions. This may end up frustrating both you and your instructor/coach or hinder the team’s performance.
Hearing Aid Accessories Â
The good thing with modern hearing aids is that most of them are sweat-resistant. Hence wearing them during intensive activities can’t spoil them.
The In-The-Ear models are mostly the best in keeping the moisture off. However, there are accessories that you can use together with the Behind-The-Ear models to keep the moisture off.
Some of the accessories include:
- Hearing aid headbands and clips – If you are worried about your hearing aids slipping off while playing, consider using headbands or clips. This helps fasten the device in place, so you don’t have to worry about it falling off.
- Head guards – For those playing a contact sport, wearing a head guard will help keep the device in place and protect fellow playmates from getting bruised if they get into close contact with you.
- Sweatbands – Intense workout may end up soaking up your Behind-The-Ear aids. Wearing sweatbands can help prevent the moisture from sipping into the aids, hence keep them dry.
Caring For The Hearing Aids
As much as wearing the aids while playing/working out will help you have a better experience, you should take good care of them once you’re done. Ensure you remove any debris or wax buildup from the receiver using the pick on the cleaning set.
Then carefully brush across the microphone to remove any dirt that may have accumulated, and clean the casing using a dry cloth. Leaving the aids in a dehumidifier overnight will also help dry off any moisture that may be trapped inside.
Adhering to a consistent after-workout care routine will help keep the aids in excellent condition and save you unnecessary repair and replacement costs. Consequently, you can continue enjoying your sports or workouts more effectively without putting your safety on the line.
