When The Ark and The Dove, under Lord Baltimore’s guidance, landed on St. Clement’s Island in the Potomac in 1634, it was determined that the island was too small and lacked resources to be a permanent settlement. After scouting inland, a bluff overlooking the St. Mary’s River was chosen for the first permanent settlement, St. Mary’s City, the first capital of the Maryland Colony and the namesake of St. Mary’s County, MD.
St. Mary’s County was known for its unique and historic culture of Chesapeake Bay tidewater farming, fishing, and crabbing. However, as military bases, and with an extensive presence of defense contractors in the area, the communities in the county have undergone a slow transformation since the 1970s.
