Early Maryland tobacco growers settled the area around Mechanicsville, MD in the 1660s, leading to the establishment of tobacco plantations like the 750-acre Cremona Farm in 1819. The community’s name was derived from the word mechanic, which referred to tradesmen who were skilled with their hands, like blacksmiths and other craftsmen who were abundant in the town.
Since 1940, Mechanicsville has been an Amish community, one of the largest daughter communities of the Lancaster County community in Pennsylvania. Mechanicsville is home to a number of small businesses and restaurants along Maryland Route 5 and Maryland Route 235, and the community is served by the St. Mary’s County Public Schools.
